9 SEO Tips for getting a new website indexed in the Search Engines

Launching a brand new website that has never existed before is an exciting time. We go through this process alot at Rise. After weeks, if not months, of hard work the website is ready for the big push live. Then comes the anti climax of waiting for Google (et al) to index your website so users can start finding it in the search engines.

Here are a few "on-site" tips we follow each time we push a brand new site live. We do this in order to speed up that process and make sure the Search Engines know about our websites as soon as they go live and index them as quickly as possible.

1. Create a Landing Page

As soon as you know what your domain name is going to be, get a simple landing page live as soon as possible. It can be just  text  if necessary but include Meta Titles, H1 Title Tags and it will need about a page of text with contact details. Link to your new domain from somwhere else. By the time you come to launch your new website the search engines should know that the domain name exisits and this will potentially speed up the indexation of your new site.

2. Run a Xenu report to check for structural issues
XENU Link Sleuth
XENU is a great (FREE) tool that analyses your site looking for structural issues, broken links. It may discover some issues that you might not have noticed just by browsing. Download it and check your URL immediately.

3. Check for Canonical Issues
Make sure all your domain name variations are pointing to your default name.Matt Cutts talks in more detail about canonicalization here. Unfortunately the only decent tool uses Linkscape Data so will only work once your site has been indexed. However it does give you some variants to test manually.

4. Verify your site with Google/Yahoo/Bing
Google Webmasters
The three major Search Engines (Google, Bing & Yahoo) all offer their own control panels for Webmasters to adminster & check some basic website settings. Not only do these free tools give you a lot of useful information about your site but it’s also an important step in getting your site recognised by the search engines as quickly as possible

6. Create HTML Sitemap
Adding an HTML sitemap to your website and linking to it from your homepage can help the deeper pages on your site get indexed a bit quicker. XML Sitemaps can create an HTML sitemap as well.

7. Optimise all Meta Titles
The Meta Title of each page is one of the most important factors in Search Engine Optimisation. Make sure that all the Meta titles are descriptive as well as being individual to each page. If you can't do this manually a good first step is to ask your development team to create the titles dynamically.
The XENU tool mentioned above is a good way of getting an overview of all the Meta Titles on your site

8. Implement Web Analytics
Google Analytics
You have done all this hard work in publishing a brand new website. Make sure you track your visitors and their behaviour on the site you can continue to make improvements. Google Analytics is a good tool to get you started. Full of great features and of course it’s free.

9. Check Page Load speed
